ACT prep focused on speed, accuracy, and a 34+ score

The ACT is the fastest-paced standardised test in US admissions. Students who score 30+ aren't just smarter, they're better trained on pacing, question prioritisation, and the ACT's specific question formats. That's exactly what we develop.

What Is the ACT?

The ACT: faster, broader, and differently structured to the SAT

The ACT is a standardised college admissions test administered by ACT Inc., scored on a composite scale of 1–36 across four sections: English (75 questions, 45 minutes), Mathematics (60 questions, 60 minutes), Reading (40 questions, 35 minutes), and Science (40 questions, 35 minutes). An optional Writing (Essay) section is required by some universities.

How the New ACT breaks down, section by section

Core

ACT English

50 questions
35 minutes
~42s per question

Down from 75 questions · pacing up from 36s — more time to breathe

  • The content. Still Usage/Mechanics and Rhetorical Skills, but shorter passages — and one passage is now always an argumentative essay.
  • Strategy. Less "gotcha" grammar, more Production of Writing: how a writer builds an argument and maintains style.
  • The trap. NO CHANGE remains an option, but with fewer questions, each error carries more weight in your scaled score.
Core

ACT Mathematics

45 questions
50 minutes
~67s per question

Down from 60 questions · pacing up from 60s — better for complex solving

  • The big change. 4 answer choices instead of 5, significantly improving your odds on educated guesses.
  • Scope. Streamlined Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. Fewer easy Pre-Algebra questions; "Integrated Math" reasoning arrives much faster.
  • Triage. With more time per question, precision beats speed. Focus on calculator efficiency and avoiding traps that look correct at first glance.
Core

ACT Reading

36 questions
40 minutes
~67s per question

Down from 40 questions · pacing up from 52s — a 27% increase in time

  • Passage types. Still Prose Fiction, Social Science, Humanities, and Natural Science — but shorter, with more emphasis on deep reasoning over speed-hunting for facts.
  • The strategy. Away from speed reading, toward Evidence-Based Selection. With more time, the ACT expects you to find the exact line that justifies your answer.
Optional

ACT Science

40 questions
40 minutes
60s per question

Total time increased by 5 minutes

  • The status. Optional. Reported as a standalone score — it doesn't affect your 1–36 Composite unless you're applying to specific STEM or Engineering programs.
  • The focus. Increased emphasis on outside science knowledge and engineering-based scenarios. Still rewards data interpretation, but now needs a stronger foundational grasp of scientific variables.

How TYCHR prepares you

The Tychr ACT preparation path

01

Full-length timed diagnostic

A complete timed ACT under realistic conditions. We calculate your composite and section scores, map which question types are costing most marks, and identify your pacing pattern across all four sections.

02

Section-specific training

Targeted coaching on your weakest sections, not equal time on everything. Science data interpretation and English rhetorical skills are commonly the highest-return areas for most students.

03

Pacing and triage strategy

We teach the specific pacing decisions that the ACT requires: when to skip and return, how to manage the English passage structure, and how to work through Science passages efficiently without getting drawn into content.

04

Full-length mock series

Full-length ACT mocks with section-level score analysis after each. We track composite score trends, identify stalling areas, and adjust focus accordingly through the final preparation weeks.

Common questions about our tutoring services

Almost never, and this is the most important thing for students to understand before starting ACT prep. The ACT Science section tests data interpretation: reading graphs, understanding experimental design, comparing conflicting viewpoints. A student who has never studied Biology can score 36 on ACT Science if they can read and interpret data quickly. Students with strong science backgrounds sometimes score lower because they spend time recalling knowledge instead of just reading the passage.
Both are accepted at virtually all US universities. We offer students a diagnostic of each before committing to a full preparation programme. The ACT tends to suit students who are strong in maths, comfortable with fast-paced questions, and can read data quickly. The SAT tends to suit students who are stronger readers and find the more contextualised maths questions more natural.
Only if your target universities require it, and the list is shorter than it used to be. Most US universities no longer require the ACT Writing score for general admissions. However, some specific programmes (particularly journalism, education, and certain liberal arts schools) still list it as required or recommended. Check your specific target university list before deciding whether to add the Writing section. We coach it if needed.
The ACT can be taken as many times as you like. Most US universities accept Superscore (taking the best section score from multiple attempts) or simply consider your best composite. We generally recommend students plan for two attempts: a baseline attempt early in Grade 11 or 12, and a second targeted attempt after a full preparation programme. Some students take a third attempt if the score gap to their target is still significant.
While the ACT lists it as optional, many STEM, Pre-Med, and Engineering programs will still strongly recommend or require it. If you take the Science section, you receive a standalone Science score and a STEM score (the average of your Math and Science results). We help families look at their target college lists to decide if the Science section is a strategic necessity for their applications.
